  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring (gel)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Cream cheese frosting for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two round cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, beat sugar and vegetable oil until blended. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in buttermilk, red food coloring, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. Once cooled, frost with cream cheese frosting between layers and on the outside.
